Abstract
The phenomenon of street child hawking is an offshoot of complex interplay of various socio-economic and cultural factors, religious, cultural, linguistic and geographical diversity. The large-scale presence of street children is a symptom of social disease. Over the last five decades, the phenomenon of child hawking has become prominent globally with serious implication for the survival of the children. The presence of child hawkers in major cities of the world has transcended the level where it was viewed as a strictly worrisome uncommon occurrence and it is escalating and growing at an alarming rate worldwide. The global estimate of child hawkers has not only attracted public concern but has also become a matter of priority to Nigeria government as well as national and international organizations. In view of this background, this study analyzes the socio-economic effects of hawking among children in some selected motor parks within Kaduna Metropolis, a study of Kawo Motor Park, Mando Motor Park and Kanti Kwari Motor Park. To address the problem of study, three research questions were raised. The researcher adopted a survey research design. A total of one hundred (100) respondents comprised the target of the study. Questionnaire and was the instrument used for data collection. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), frequency tables and percentages (%) were employed in the data analysis. It was discovered that majority of the respondents had been involved in street because of poverty. Street hawking results in children dropping out of school, been sexual abuse. Be that as it may, most of the respondents in this study had not had been harassed sexually while engaged in hawking. Parents should tried as much as possible to send their kids to school so as to reduced the practices of street hawking, intensive enlightenment campaign should be made through radio jingles, television clips, to educate the parents on the danger of exposing their children to street hawking, awareness about family planning should be created among parents to alleviate the burden of too many children, campaigns should be organized to educate parents and children on the evils of child hawking, legislation should be made to forbid children from hawking especially during school hours, government should provide and make education compulsory for all, government should enact policies and legislations that will protect children from street hawking and child maintenance allowance be paid to unemployed parents as solutions to the problem of street hawking.
