1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
No matter how far back we trace the history of human society, we always find people working together for some common end.  In the earliest times it was the family unit that shielded the individuals from the adverse influences of the outside world, whether these were economic or physical.
A cooperative is a family of people who unite with equal rights and equal duties to overcome the difficulties that affect them all, working together for their common economic and social advantage and sharing the business risk,  they run an enterprise to which they delegate one or more of their economic functions, according to their common needs as producers or consumers.  That is the purpose of the voluntary self help associations we find today in form of various types of cooperative societies in every corner of the world.
The idea of cooperative came into being as a reaction by the common people (the exploited class and the down  trodden) to the excesses of individualism, that is to say because of the evils of the individualistic capitalist system.
According to C.C. Bob Igwe (2004: Pg 6) “The first cooperative society was formed in 1844  in Toad Lane, Rochadale, England by twenty eight (28) weavers.  Their society was called “he equitable society of the Rochadle pioneers”.  Their society was formed because of the industrial revolution period of 1750 – 1859, they formed their society against the excessive capitalist exploitation so that they can be freed from the chains of capitalism, competition, exploitation, insecurity and bad business practices among others.
As the purpose of this study is all about how to organize a cooperative society in a way that it will be viable (ie producing the intended result of its formation), it is important to note that these men (weavers) that formed the first cooperative society studied, discussed and planned together throughout the year 1843 and by August 15, 1844 they had organized their consumer society.  This shows that they also carried out a form of this study in order to know how they will organize their society so that it will be viable.
This study itself is looking into how to organize  a viable cooperative society using a viable cooperative society using Igbo Eze North East Local Government Area as a case study.
