ABSTRACT

Agriculture any where in the world can hardly remain productive without efficient and optimal application of appropriate agricultural inputs, the current food and fibre gaps we are witnessing in the country is being attributed mainly to the wide gap in agricultural input supplies to the Small-Scale Farmers, who are the centre piece of agricultural production in Nigerian.
The main aim of this project work is to determine the efficiency and effectiveness of he agencies participating in agricultural input distribution to small scale farmers in Enugu State, with a view to identifying and recommending more efficient input delivery system.
The data for the study were obtained by interviewing identifiable input distribution agencies and farmers, sing structured questionnaires and from critical review of published/unpublished reports and official documents.
The study revealed that ten (10 agencies where involved in the input distribution to farmers in the area, but most of them lacked logistics for physical distribution of reach the grass –root farmers.
The survey showed that about 70% of the farmers are not merely aware of the increase crop yields associated with application of improved planting materials and fertilizer, but have massively adopted these technologies.
It is found out that paucity supplies of input, late delivery, farmers inaccessibility to genuine input sources input diversion from approved centres, high cost, hoarding and inadequate infrastructural support in rural areas; were the major obstacles militating against efficient input
