ABSTRACT
Transportation which is defined as the movement of people and goods from one place to another is seen as an engine of economic growth. It is regarded as the sector, reactor and catalyst which other sectors needed to survive.
In recent years, this very important sectors has become so costly that people find it difficult to move about. It is because of this that the researcher decided to study the effect of this high cost on the economy.
The researcher concentrated his research work on road transportation in three zones of Enugu urban. He also selected three-sectors of the Economy namely industrial, commercial and agricultural and studied the effect of this transportation cost on them.
The researcher distributed questionnaire to respondents from the three sectors chosen from which data used for the research was collected oral interview was also used.
From the information gathered, the researcher found out that the high cost of transportation effects the economy adversely. Among the findings are:-
a. High cost of transportation has led to high cost of goods/products.
b. High cost of transportation hampers the evacuation and thus, the marketing of agricultural products.
c. High cost of transportation reduces the standards of living of the people.
d. Bad road, high cost of vehicle maintenance, inadequate transportation vehicles and increase in the price of petroleum are the major causes of high transportation costs.
Finally, the researcher made some recommendations
which if well implemented will solve the problem that contribute to the high transportation cost. If these problems are solved, the adverse effect will be reduced if not totally removed.
