INTRODUCTION
The fact remains clear that small-scale business has been and will continue to be the foundation or root of any big business today. It could be understand as economic history that many advanced countries of the world which have attained the height of industrialization, started as more small scale firm, which later metamorphosed into gigantic corporations. Nigerians desire to concentrate on developing the infant indigenous firm has always been buttressed by and reflected in a wide range of economic policies. Infact, the present consciousness on the part of every segment of the society including the government of small medium industrial growth cannot be surprised, and the delay in appreciating the sector as an economic catalyst is frustrating.
This particular study covers a typical small-scale industry that has played a major role on other industry but the sachet water industry with particular reverence to REDIMA water, Enugu. However, the evolution of satchel water industries in Nigeria started as a result of people’s inability to obtain canned spring water. Sachet water becomes the major means of drinking water outside one’s home, considering the fact that, the cost per sachet is low compare to canned water is so meager when compare with those that drink sachet water. This simply means that sachet water has a higher rate of turnover to canned water.
Meanwhile, REDIMA water is located at Enugu East, Enugu. It can be traced at No. 25 Ozoudor Street, by state Housing Estate, Abakpa Nike Enugu. The quantity that is contained in a sachet is 5ocl enough to be sipped by an individual. Its major mode of distribution is by truck delivery and by private hawking. This REDIMA water is very affordable and this has made many people to drift from canned water to satchet water. As a result, the demand for the importation and production of canned water has reduced to a large extent. Thereby being an attempt of self-reliance by Nigerians.
To be frank, economy self-reliance is not only discussed extensively in Nigeria but in all West African countries. The call by the economic community of the West African States (ECOWAS) to her member states stop or at least minimize the export of her raw materials to the advanced or industrialized nations to minimize the importation of food and to look inward to help themselves by encouraging small scale industries.
Small-scale industries provide the backbone for cottage and rural industrialization. They are important in the development of rural economy in that they widen the economic social and standard of living of the people in the area of employment.
This has been the case of REDIMA water since its operation in the area both skilled and unskilled is given employment opportunity.
The economic crisis in the 80’s really helped to revive the interest in small-scale sectors, which is based on the fundamental role of entrepreneurship, and management skill in the development.
