Lecturers of the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED), Ijanikin, Lagos, on Monday protested against the non-payment of their over 17 months pension and non-payment of three years retirees benefits.

NAN reports that the lecturers held the protest at the Government House, Alausa.

There were reports that the lecturers also protested against non-payment of 18 months’ salary arrears and non-remittance of over N150 million deducted co-operative funds to their accounts.

The lecturers carried placards reading: “Fashola Pay Us Our Pension Arrears”, “Is It A Sin To Be Lecturers ?”.

Mr Abiodun Aremu, the Chairman of the Joint Action Front (JAF), the co-coordinator of the protest, told newsmen at the protest that their grievances also included poor funding of the institution.

Aremu added that they were also fighting against structural defect of the newly inaugurated College of Health Centre and attempt to reverse the retirement age from 65 years to 60 years.

He added that the protest was not all about politics but a demand for the rights of the lecturers.

  • Abia Polytechnic ASUP Suspends Strike; to Resume Monday

The Abia State Polytechnic chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics today announced the suspension of its 12 day old strike.

The union had on August 12 embarked on a strike following the failure of the governing council and management to pay lecturers’ salary arrears.

The ASUP Chairman, Precious Nwakodo, said in Aba that the strike was suspended because the authorities of the polytechnic paid two month arrears.

Mr. Nwakodo said that work would resume on Monday, August 25.

He said that the governing council had, in a letter dated July 10, 2014 and signed by its Chairman, Christopher Enweremadu, promised to pay two out of five months’ arrears.

The chairman expressed gratitude to the state government for the payment, adding that the remaining three months arrears would be paid when its subvention was released.

  • 300 Level Student of Covenant University Kidnapped and Murdered

kidnapped covenant university studentA 300 level Electrical Engineering student of the Covenant University, Otta in Ogun State, John Chinedu Okere, has been murdered and left in the pool of his blood by friends, who demanded for ransom from his parents.

According to reports, Chinedu, 20, left home Wednesday morning, August 6, 2014, to a Hospital in Yaba, Lagos for medical reasons and never returned.

He reportedly left home with about N6000 and that was the last time he was seen alive.

The mysterious disappearance of Chinedu caused tension as the parents ran helter-skelter in search of him to no avail.

They gathered from some family members that one of his friends called on phone earlier that morning to tell him to meet him at an undisclosed hotel.

At about mid-day, the victim’s father, Jude Okere, received an SMS notifying him that Chinedu had been kidnapped.

Later, he received a phone call from a hidden number demanding N10 million ransom for the release of his son. The caller allegedly threatened to kill the victim if the parents refused to comply as the line went dead.

Chinedu’s father said “At about mid-day, I received an SMS that John had been kidnapped. Later, I received a phone call from a hidden number. The caller said they had my son, Chinedu and demanded N10 million as ransom threatening to kill him if we refuse to comply. Immediately, I inquired who the caller was, the line went dead. My wife and I quickly reported the case to the Divisional Police Station at Sabo, Yaba.”

After the case was reported to the Police at Sabo, Yaba, it was later transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Ikeja the next day where investigations commenced.

It was learnt that initially when the whole issue started, the family of the victim felt it was a kidnap that would just be resolved but unfortunately, as events continued to unfold, it turned out to be a premeditated murder. Shockingly, the decomposed corpse of Chinedu was discovered in one of the rooms at ‘DE Homes Hotel’ located in Ejigbo by one of their staff, two days later.

According to reports, the Manager of the hotel went to Ejigbo Divisional Police Station on Friday, 8, 2014, to report the case of murder and investigation began.

A reliable source in the hotel told Vanguard that early Wednesday morning, the prime suspect, Okorocha Michael along with another young man simply identified as Okey, checked into the hotel with the name Christian. “He booked the room for three days with the name Christian. He claimed he was a youth corps member who wanted to write exams and would be there from that Wednesday to Friday. He also said he was expecting his Cousin to join him in the hotel.

‘After booking, Michael left his friend Okey in the hotel and returned an hour before the victim, Chinedu arrived the hotel, which was at about 3pm that day. As soon as Chinedu arrived the hotel, Michael took him to the room. We don’t know what happened inside the room. However, it was later gathered that during their stay in the room, the suspect reportedly confronted the victim on some personal issues. The confrontation eventually led to a heated argument, which later led to the suspect strangulating the victim to death. On Friday, a hotel staff discovered the lifeless body of the young man and alerted the police.

The 24-year-old suspect, Okorocha Michael, who was arrested on Sunday, in a friend’s house around Ajah area in Lagos, is a graduate of Lagos City Polytechnic, Ikeja. He has been unemployed since he completed his youth service in February this year.

The Lagos state Police Command is currently investigating the case.

  • 486 Exam Magic Centres to be Shut Down in Anambra State

No fewer than 486 centres of examination magic in Anambra State are to be shut down as part of measures to curb examination malpractices in the education sector, the Commissioner for Education, Professor Kate Omenugha, has said.

Speaking at the 10th anniversary of St. Joseph’s Academic Award for 2014, the commissioner observed that the miracle centres had been aiding and abating examination malpractices, especially during West African School Certificate Examinations, WASC, and National Examination Council, NECO, examinations.

According to her, the decision to shut down the magic centres became necessary due to the manner their operators have fashioned them to swindle unsuspecting, desperate candidates.

She said: “We have govern-ment and approved private schools that are saddled with the responsibility of training our children to become functional members of our society.”

  • 50 University of Namibia Students Stranded at Hostels

Namibian students numbering over 50 were stranded at the University of Namibia after their loans which are administered by the Namibian Students Financial Assistance Fund could not cover for their hostel and accomodation fees.

Speaking to The Namibian yesterday, Unam spokesperson John Haufiku confirmed this, saying communication between the Fund and the students should improve, so that awareness is created and parents arrange to assist with the payments.

Four of the students, who spoke on condition of anonymity yesterday, said they came from the holidays and were to register last week Friday but to their surprise they were told they must first settle half of what they owe the university before they could be issued keys to their rooms.

According to them, this was a shocking revelation as they had been uninformed about the turn of events, which saw most students having to squat in their friends’ rooms while some slept in the hostel corridors.

A second-year law student said her loan in the first year amounted to about N$30 000 but she found that this year, it had been reduced to approximately N$20 000.

She said she lives on a farm outside Windhoek and her mother had to arrange accommodation with a friend where she says she is uncomfortable.

“I was told to pay N$8 000 before I could get my keys. Where will I get that money? This is why I got a loan in the first place,” she said.

She further pointed out that she had tried to negotiate with the hostel staff, so she can pay in installments but all attempts were in vain.

Another student said the whole situation is unrealistic as most students had no means to get money at such short notice, “A friend of mine was talking of getting a cash loan, which is even worse.”

Similarly, a second-year science student said he had managed to get some assistance from his uncle and has now moved into the hostel.

“It is bad, because most of them are from the north. Yesterday, there were some students who slept in the corridor. I walked by because there was nothing I could do to help,” he said.

Haufiku said the students, who started registration last week Friday, should know that there is usually a difference they should settle when the loan cannot cover the hostel fees.

“The university would usually take the tuition fee from the loan money and the difference goes to the hostel. Sometimes it is not enough and students’ parents should chip in to assist,” said Haufiku.

  • How to Write a Good Table of Content for Your Project or Seminar

Writing an excellent project work (whether for your degree or diploma programme) starts with creating a very straight forward and easy table of content. The table of content serves as a map for the project work as it helps you streamline your search for materials.

A welll written project Table of Content makes it easier for the student to write his or her project work. It also guides the reviewer or supervisor in going through the project work.

What a Good Table of Content Should Contain

For project works there is no hard and fast rule to creating a good table of content. In fact table of contents vary for various courses. The format for table of content for a project work in engineering will vary from a table of content for project topic in accounting.

Aside from these variances in table of content based on the discpline or course there are generally tips that will help every student or scholar develop a formidable table of content.

Tips to Creating a Good Table of Content

    1. Make the Chapter One Your Introduction : In most project work the first chapter is used to introduce basic concepts, issues and scope to be discussed in the main project work. There is no fixed sequence for the writing the sub chapters of your Chapter One however (in case of research projects) it mostly contains;
    – Statement of problem
    – Scope of Work
    – Methodology
    – Definition of Key or Significant Terms
    – Scope and Challenges of Study or Work

    2. Most Times Chapter Two is for Review of Related Literature: You use your second chapter to review the basic issues and concepts up for discussion. The content of your chapter two will depend on the project topic you are working on.

    3. Chapters Three and Four are the Main Body of Your Project Work: Within these two chapters you are expected to go fully into discussion and analysis of your project work. You discuss the methodology and give any theoretical framework involved in the project work. Many times (depending on how sophisticated your project is) your Chapter Four or Five might be the results discussion and analysis chapter that will seek to deduce results from the work done in the previous chapter.

    4. Close with Summary and Conclusion and Perhaps Recommendations

To make sure you are right on track with creating your table check for table of content of past project works from your school library on similar courses or go online and look for clues of past project reports in the same discipline as yours.
